About Me

Hi! I'm a graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill's Hussman School of Journalism and Media, earning my master's in journalism in just one year. I chose the Public Life Reporting track because I'd like to further hone my reporting skills across a variety of beats and delve deeper into the specialization of editing.

Before I started graduate school, I attended UNC-Chapel Hill (2x Tar Heel!) and earned a bachelor's degree in English and another in journalism. Reading and writing have been a major part of my life since childhood, so I couldn't imagine myself studying anything else. I am drawn to stories of all kinds and realized I loved telling them in journalism when I was 16, working as a freelance writer for The Wake Weekly, a community newspaper in Wake Forest, North Carolina. It was a privilege to serve my community in this way, and those early stories helped shape the journalist I am today. One who embraces challenges, like tackling new topics, and has great respect for the process of producing a story.

For me, journalism has been heavily about discovery, not just about the communities I've reported on, but also for myself. Finding my voice as a writer is a long-term goal I'm working toward. It's one reason I am interested in an editing career -- to help writers see a piece of themselves in every piece they write, while still following editorial standards and all else professional, of course. Journalism is an art. You should have a signature you're proud of :)

“I became a journalist to come as close to the heart of the world as possible.”
